Introduction
When someone asks "how much per port?", answering with a single fixed number is misleading. Two projects with the same port count can differ by a factor of two in price and both be priced correctly. It helps to know where the money goes.
The five cost components
- Network materials: cable, keystones, faceplates, patch panels, patch cords. This is the only part most people think about.
- Pathways: tray, trunking, conduit, clips and fixings. In a building with no existing route, this can cost more than the cable itself.
- Installation labour: pulling, termination, rack assembly. Driven by the condition of the building, not by the port count.
- Testing and certification: tester and operator time, port by port.
- Documentation: labelling, as-built drawings and the port schedule.
What drives the price up
An occupied building. Working outside office hours, moving furniture and installing in phases all reduce crew productivity.
No suspended ceiling, or an inaccessible one. Every metre that has to be run on the surface and made tidy takes several times as long as the same metre inside a ceiling void.
Average run length. In wide buildings, the distance from the rack to the furthest outlet raises both cable cost and pulling time. Sometimes adding a floor rack is cheaper than pulling long runs.
Special requirements. LSZH jackets, screened cable, fire-rated routes, and clinical or industrial requirements.
What brings the price down
Deciding early; if the network route is installed at the same time as the electrical work and the suspended ceiling, a large part of the pathway cost disappears. Higher volume also lowers the cost per port, because the fixed project costs are spread across more of them.
How to compare quotations
Ask for an itemised quotation, not a single figure. It should state the brand and model of the materials, whether testing every port and its report is included in the price, and what the documentation package contains. The difference between two quotations is usually hidden in exactly those three items.
