Network certification testing and formal Fluke reports

This is the single point where a professional contractor and an amateur one become distinguishable: is the project handed over with the phrase "it works", or with a number? We hand over numbers.

What gets measured

Wire map, length, propagation delay and delay skew, insertion loss, near-end crosstalk (NEXT and PS NEXT), far-end crosstalk (ACR-F), and return loss. Each parameter is reported as the measured value against the standard limit, and what matters is the margin, not merely that it passed.

Permanent Link or Channel

A Permanent Link test measures only the fixed infrastructure — patch panel to outlet — and that is exactly what the contractor delivers. A Channel test measures the whole path including patch cords, and its limits are more relaxed. For project handover, the correct test is Permanent Link.

The report

The output is delivered as a complete file: every port under its own name and number, the result, the margin on each parameter and the worst pair. That report is also what activates the system warranty.

Frequently asked questions about certification testing

What is the test report actually good for?
Three things: it is the basis for handover and final payment, it is the condition for activating the cable manufacturer’s system warranty, and it is the reference for future fault-finding — when a port misbehaves three years later, comparing it against day-one figures immediately tells you whether the problem is the infrastructure or the equipment.
What happens if a port fails?
It is corrected and retested. A port that has failed is not handed over. The usual causes are poor termination, a tight bend, and physical damage during pulling.
